Sofi Xian (冼納然, also Sofia Lee)
is a researcher, cultural theorist, and multimedia artist based in Amsterdam and Berlin.

■ ABOUT
Informed by a diverse background spanning computational linguistics, experimental photography, film studies, and sound art, her work considers how memory is externalised through technology and becomes systematised. Her particular focuses are on how unpopular, naïve, marginal, repetitive and forgotten detritus of culture serve as potent reservoirs of emergent aesthetics and ambient meaning formations.
As a founding member of the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, Sofi has pioneered approaches to consumer aesthetics and contributed foundational research on Frutiger Aero, a term she also coined along with Froyo Tam. She has led workshops on aesthetic theory and research methods, including at Parsons School of Design, Het Nieuwe Instituut (NL), Center for Digital Narrative at University of Bergen, City University of Hong Kong, and Institute of Network Cultures.
In 2018, she also founded digicam.love, a community dedicated to uncovering unexplored and forgotten ways of seeing through point-and-shoot digital cameras (digicams). As a part of digicam.love, she has organised over 50 photowalks in over a dozen countries over a span of 8 years, including one in London with The Photographer's Gallery.
She holds a MA in Linguistics (Text Mining) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her linguistic work focuses on computational approaches to Slavic languages, on which she has published two papers.
Her forthcoming essay, Archaeology of a Promised Future will be published as a standalone volume in AKSIOMA's Multithread series, to be released in November 2026.
